Le Syrah
Spice and Depth in the Wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape
A quintessential grape variety of the Rhône Valley, Syrah lends color intensity, tannic structure, and a complex aromatic palette to the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. At Domaine Berthet-Rayne, this noble grape expresses itself with elegance, providing depth and length on the palate to our Tradition Rouge and Les Cigalons cuvées.
A Demanding Grape that Elevates Terroirs
Although less prevalent than Grenache within the appellation, Syrah finds favorable conditions to unleash its full potential in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It thrives in clay-limestone soils scattered with rolled pebbles that retain heat from the day, allowing for optimal grape maturation. At Domaine Berthet-Rayne, our Syrah vines, aged 30 to 50 years, are planted in the terroirs of Chapouin and Coudoulet.
Syrah is a vigorous yet demanding grape. Short pruning is practiced to control yields and enhance concentration. Under the influence of the Mistral wind, which sanitizes the clusters, the berries accumulate precious aromatic compounds, particularly the peppery and spicy notes characteristic of the variety.
A Grape that Contributes Color and Structure
In our Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wines, Syrah is the perfect complement to Grenache and other grape varieties. It contributes color, integrated tannins, and rich aromatic complexity, with notes of black fruits, licorice, and spices. Its combination with Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault produces wines of rare complexity that will improve over many years.
Syrah makes up 5% of our Tradition Rouge cuvée. Harvested at optimal maturity, it is carefully vinified to preserve its fruitiness and freshness.
In our prestigious Les Cigalons cuvée, Syrah plays a more significant role, comprising 10% of the blend alongside Grenache and Mourvèdre. Harvested from our best parcels, it is aged for 12 months to reveal its full complexity and depth. The wine stands out with its deep color, intense aromas of black fruits, spices, and licorice, and a rich, velvety palate.
