A LITTLE HISTORY

Our domain is above all a story of passion, craftsmanship, and transmission. For several generations, our family has been cultivating vineyards primarily in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes-du-Rhône appellations.

It all began many years ago when our ancestors acquired these vineyard lands in the heart of the region. Since then, we have worked tirelessly to maintain the quality of our vines, respecting the rhythms of nature and preserving our wine heritage.

In the family for 4 generations, the estate covers 29 hectares, mainly in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes-du-Rhône appellations.

The history of the estate began in the 1920s when Raoul Raymond took over his father's farm. He tore up the cherry orchards and planted vines. Aware of the potential of this remarkable terroir for growing vines, we are able to produce great wines that can be kept for many years.

His son Emile, with the same passion, decided to continue planting vines and by the 1970s had built up a fully wine-growing estate to ensure the long-term future of Domaine des Cigalons.

The family business continued with the arrival of his son-in-law Christian Berthet-Rayne in 1978, who took over part of the vineyard to create Domaine Berthet-Rayne. A few years later, Christian took over the leased vines on the Barnouine hillside.

Domaine Berthet-Rayne then created a range of wines to be sold in bottles in France.
Between 1995 and 2000, the estate began to develop its export business, particularly in Europe and then the United States.

The expansion of the vineyard required the construction of a new storage cellar to provide greater capacity for the production and conservation of the wines.

In 2003, the estate welcomed a new generation with the arrival of her granddaughter Laure Berthet-Rayne, followed by her husband Martial Capeau in 2005, who first took charge of the vines and then the cellar in subsequent years.

In 2009, Laure and Martial acquired a parcel of Châteauneuf-du-Pape on the famous Coudoulet terroir and founded their own Domaine Berthet-Capeau to market this red Châteauneuf-du-Pape under the Elixir des Papes brand.

In 2013 and again in 2017, the estate continued its development on the Gardiole, Coudoulet and Barnouine terroirs.

Their common goal is to give Domaine Berthet-Rayne an international reputation and thus perpetuate the family history of the estate.
