Le Cinsault
Finesse and Elegance in the Red Wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape
As a supporting grape variety in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, Cinsault adds a touch of finesse and elegance to the great red wines. Native to Provence, it thrives in the sun-drenched terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, offering ideal conditions to express its delicacy. At Domaine Berthet-Rayne, Cinsault is prized for its delicate fruitiness and freshness.
A Delicate Southern Variety
Cinsault is a grape variety from the south of France, likely originating from Provence. As a dual-purpose variety, it can produce both wine grapes and table grapes. In the vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, it is exclusively cultivated for winemaking. At Domaine Berthet-Rayne, our Cinsault plots enjoy favorable exposure, achieving optimal maturity while maintaining lovely freshness. Pruning is tailored to control the yields of this generous variety and enhance concentration. Harvested at peak maturity, Cinsault reveals delicate aromas of fresh red fruits.
A Subtle Blending Grape
In the red wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cinsault is never vinified alone but always blended with other varieties such as Grenache, Syrah, or Mourvèdre. Though lightly colored, it is aromatic and brings finesse, suppleness, and notes of fresh floral and red fruits to the wines. Its freshness contributes to the balance and smoothness on the palate. Cinsault makes up 10% of our Tradition Rouge cuvée.
Harvested at optimal maturity, it is gently vinified to preserve its delicate fruity character. Aging in tanks allows it to maintain its aromatic freshness and adds suppleness to the blend. In our Les Cigalons cuvée, Cinsault is also present in a small proportion, adding a touch of finesse and freshness to this wine dominated by Grenache and Mourvèdre. Harvested from our best parcels, it contributes to the balance and smoothness of this powerful yet velvety cuvée.
