Le Bourboulenc

Fraîcheur et vivacité des vins blancs de Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Freshness and Vivacity in the White Wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape

A Provençal Variety Adapted to Hot Terroirs

Resulting from a natural cross between Gouais blanc and a still unknown variety, Bourboulenc is a child of the South. It appreciates low altitude terroirs that are hot and dry like those of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where it can ripen late and slowly to develop its delicate aromas.

At Domaine Berthet-Rayne, our Bourboulenc plots are planted on the terroirs most adapted to this demanding variety. Pruning is controlled to promote good aeration of the clusters and limit diseases like downy mildew or powdery mildew to which Bourboulenc is sensitive. Manual harvesting at optimal maturity allows preserving all the aromatic freshness of the berries.

A Complementary Variety in Blends

In the white wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Bourboulenc is never vinified alone but always blended with other varieties like Clairette, Roussanne or Grenache blanc. It brings them a welcome and uncommon acidity in this hot climate. Its delicate aromas of exotic fruits and white flowers, although fleeting, perfectly complement the aromatic palette.

At Domaine Berthet-Rayne, Bourboulenc is part of the composition of our white Tradition cuvée. Vinified with care at low temperature to preserve its freshness, it contributes to the balance and vivacity of the blend. With a few years of aging, it participates in the aromatic complexity and length on the palate of our wines.

Bourboulenc is a discreet but oh so precious variety in our blends. Its acidity and freshness are essential assets for the balance and elegance of our white wines.
